Question 1

What is a BCBA?

Accepted Answer

A Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) is a graduate-level certification in behavior analysis. BCBAs assess behavior, design intervention plans, train caregivers, and modify environments — skills that are directly applicable to water safety for neurodivergent clients.

Question 2

Why are autistic children at higher drowning risk?

Accepted Answer

Children with autism are up to 160 times more likely to die from drowning than their neurotypical peers, according to Columbia University research. This risk is driven primarily by wandering and elopement behavior — not an inability to swim. The water hazards that matter most exist in daily environments before a child ever reaches a pool.

Question 3

What is the BRIDGE to Safety Framework?

Accepted Answer

The BRIDGE to Safety™ Framework is a professional certification developed by Blended Aquatics that shows BCBAs how to apply their existing skills — environmental assessment, behavior goal development, caregiver training, and generalization programming — to water safety in non-aquatic settings. No pool required.

Question 4

What is wandering or elopement and how does it relate to drowning?

Accepted Answer

Elopement is when a child leaves a safe environment without permission or supervision. Among autistic children, drowning accounts for more than 70% of elopement-related fatalities according to the National Autism Association. Because BCBAs already write elopement behavior intervention plans, water safety is a natural and critical extension of their existing clinical work.
